After several former museums, countless restorations, years of debate, and four exciting architectural competitions, the New Acropolis Museum in Athens, Greece is finally open with a full collection of what Dimitrios Pandermalis describes as “the most famous works of classical antiquity.” The New Acropolis Museum comprehensively details the extensive design project of the museum that was guided by the competition in 2000, and the works of art and history on display in the museum.
Contrasting the ancient ruins of the Parthenon, a mere 280 meters away, the New Acropolis Museum was designed to be an incredibly innovative experience for the visitor. Integrated into its urban environment, the museum has a breath-takingly clear view of the Acropolis complex, and the ruins of the Makriyianni site, which is visible through glass flooring below.
In a detailed architectural chronology, the book follows the complete decision-making process behind the creation of the New Acropolis Museum, as well as the conservation and selection of the sculptures in the museum’s collection. Over 200 photographs and illustrations exhibit the ideas for the design of the museum and the overall site, restoration of the sculptures, as well as their display within the museum.
