The author cleverly weaves facts from historical texts, documentaries, and second-hand interviews to create an over-all picture of the Greek world and its people. Through the vividly-written anecdotes the reader will experience the trials and tribulations of the Greek immigrant at the beginning of the 20th century as well as the fear of living under the Turkish occupation and will laugh at the concerns and responses in the “Dear Toula” advice column. Each chapter intertwines to form a mosaic, thus giving the reader a sense of what being Greek is all about.
Growing up as the privileged daughter of a Greek family during the time of the Turkish occupation, nothing was good enough for her. Her father, a wealthy merchant, makes deals to smuggle his daughter and her future husband to Odessa where they will be safe until Greece is free once again. What happens on the night before her wedding changes her life forever. |
